Russian Forces Overthrow Opposition in Kazakhstan – Days 185-186 (August 27-28, 2022)

UAF – Ukrainian Forces
RF – Russian Forces
MLRS – Multiple Launch Rocket Systems

Summary of the Events

After four days of no ground assaults, RF launched heavily over the weekend, but with limited success towards Bakhmut and Kharkiv. UAF continues to batter Russian military bases and weapon depots with MLRS.

Battle for the Donbas

UAF hit a relatively empty Russian military base behind the lines in Svatove, Luhansk region on Sunday night. The base was being used to train a small detachment of police officers. No details have been released.

Target Bakhmut – The fight for Bakhmut was the most intense and RF made some progress. RF have reached the outskirts of Yakovlivka and Kodema, but UAF still control the high ground. Heavy fighting continues near Soledar and Bakhmutske. RF attempted to reach Soledar but were not successful. RF attempted to launch ground assaults towards Vesela Dolyna, Zaitseve, and Mayorsk but all were repelled. Bakhmut itself was shelled killing two civilians.

Target Avdiivka – RF attempted assaults against Nevelske and Oleksandropil on Saturday but were unsuccessful and retreated. On Sunday, RF fired on nine positions and conducted airstrikes on two positions. RF attempted to move on Pervomaiskyi but met with fierce resistance and were pushed back.

Target Slovyansk – RF attempted assaults on Brazhkivka, Dovhenke, and Bohorodychne over the weekend, but suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat.

Target Kramatorsk – RF launched attacks on Hryhorivka, Vershyna, and Semyhiria over the weekend but were unsuccessful and forced to retreat.

Southern Donetsk Line – RF launched three assaults along the line over the weekend but were unsuccessful against Pavlika and Prechystivka losing two infantry vehicles. The assault on Oleksandropil continues.

Battle for Kherson (includes Mykolaiv)

RF released a maelstrom of attacks throughout the region on 26 locations Sunday night including Mykolaiv. No reports have been released on any casualties or damage.

UAF conducted several attacks against RF targets destroying three weapon depots and an air defense system. Nearly 60 Russian soldiers were killed in the attacks along with two MLRS, four howitzers, three artillery guns, a mortar launcher, and fourteen armored vehicles.

A RF combat unit of only ten men were captured attempting sabotage and reconnaissance in the Kherson region. The significance of this is the small size of the unit. It shows that Russia is not able to put together such a squad with the necessary number of troops to carry out its mission.

Battle for Zaporizhia

Zaporizhia was also heavily hit over the weekend. Twenty cities were hit heavily with missiles, artillery, and air strikes. Nineteen UAF locations along the defense line were also shelled. The only casualties were two children after 14-hours of bombing Orikhiv resulted in the damage of nine high-rise residential buildings and forty private homes. An empty boarding school was also destroyed.

Shelling continues at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant with Russian accusing Ukraine and Ukraine accusing Russia. The evidence points to Russia though as the attacks are made from such short range and the Ukrainian staff operating the plant have also reported that it is Russia attacking near the plant. The situation continues to be critical as the risk of hydrogen leakage from the largest nuclear power plant in Europe increases every day.

UAF hit a large RF military base near Melitopol and an administrative building where Russia is preparing a sham referendum on joining the territory to Russia.

Partisans assassinated a retired Ukrainian border guard who had collaborated with the Russians and was appointed Chief of Police in Mykhailivka.

Battle for Kharkiv

RF surprised UAF with a successful assault on Udy recapturing the city north of Kharkiv. They attempted to move deeper toward Svitlynche but were repelled. RF also attempted to retake Dementiivka but were stopped and forced to retreat.

RF fired MLRS against central neighborhoods in Kharkiv destroying an historical home and a school. A missile was fired at a business site in Kharkiv on Saturday as well. One woman was killed, and a man wounded.

Other Regions

Dnipropetrovsk – RF fired missiles on Pokrovs’ke, Marhanets, Zelenodolsk, Chervonohryhorivka, and Nikopol over the weekend. The attack on Nikopol was especially brutal damaging several buildings. More than 1500 are left without electricity in the city. They also fired seven times on Nikopol and three times on Zelenodolsk. Several buildings were damaged but there were no casualties.

Rivne – RF fired four missiles on Sarny hitting military infrastructure. There were no casualties. The damage spread to thirty residential buildings and a hospital.

Sumy – RF continues to shell UAF positions along the border to pin down UAF troops in defending the region. Two people were injured in attacks over the weekend.

Other News

Ukrainian staff at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant have leaked out messages that they are being tortured by RF to remain quiet during inspections next week by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Staff are being taken “to the basement” and “people who return from the cellar after such conversations don’t say a word at all.”

Now that Russia has overthrown the opposition in Kazakhstan, they recalled their troops to return to their base. But the troops have refused fearing that they will then be deployed to Ukraine.

Russia has begun moving their military barracks in occupied cities next to elementary schools using Ukrainian children as human shields. And they are blackmailing the parents forcing them to send their children to school where they are taught to hate Ukraine. Ukraine has called on UNESCO to intervene.

International Support

The UK announced they will give six underwater drones to Ukraine to clear the waters of the Black Sea from mines and will train UAF in their use.
