What The Bible Says About Serving Others

As Christians, a principle that stands as a pillar of our faith is serving others.

You may not always find the exact phrase “serving others” in the Bible, but we see this call to service in many ways throughout the scriptures.

One of the most powerful stories about serving others is found in the Gospel of John, where Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. This act of humility and service sets an example for us to follow.

Serving others doesn’t make us any less important. Rather, it reflects the love and humility of Christ that we are called to emulate.

Remember that Jesus, the Son of God, took on the role of a servant, teaching us that greatness in God’s kingdom is measured by our willingness to serve others (John 13:1-17).

Biblical Teachings On Serving Others

Jesus’ teachings are filled with exhortations to serve others. In Matthew 20:26-28, Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

This passage highlights that true leadership in the kingdom of God is marked by service and selflessness.

Another profound teaching is found in Matthew 25:35-40, where Jesus speaks about the final judgment. He says, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

Jesus equates serving others with serving Him, showing that our acts of kindness towards others are acts of worship to God.

Practical Ways To Serve Others

You can serve others in many ways, as shown in the Bible. Here are some practical suggestions:

1. Helping the Needy: Take note of those who are struggling to make ends meet or going through a hard time and offer your support in any way you can, whether it be financially or  simply lending a listening ear. Your kindness and compassion can make a world of difference in someone’s life.

2. Volunteering: Dedicate time to volunteer in community services, hospitals, or local charities.

3. Acts of Kindness: Go out of your way to visit the sick, comfort the grieving, or assist the elderly. This way, you can reflect His love to the world around you.
