Our Sister Church Initiative, established to support Ukrainian churches amidst the challenges of the Russian invasion, has been instrumental in providing vital assistance to congregations across Ukraine. With significant portions of their memberships affected by displacement or conscription, many churches have struggled to sustain their ministries. One of the most pressing issues has been the inability to pay pastoral salaries, forcing pastors to seek employment outside the church, thereby reducing their availability for ministry during these crucial times. Through partnerships with churches in North America and Europe, this initiative alleviates financial burdens by specifically providing pastors with salaries. This enables pastors to focus on their pastoral duties and provide support to their communities without the distraction of having to seek alternative employment.
One such example of many of the impacts of the Sister Church Initiative is evident in the partnership between New Hope Evangelical Church in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, and the International Church of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Despite facing significant adversities in March, including the mobilization of two key church leaders and the need for pastoral care due to personal struggles of another, New Hope persevered, buoyed by the prayers and encouragement of its supporters. In fact, the church expanded its ministry during this period, establishing two new ministries. The dedicated team began serving wounded soldiers in local hospitals, providing both physical and spiritual support through conversations and testimonies about Christ. Some soldiers have even started attending church meetings, responding positively to the message of hope. Additionally, the church’s sisters initiated a project to weave nets for soldiers, enhancing their safety while seizing opportunities for evangelism in the community.
Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a new church in a neighboring village in collaboration with Transform Ukraine, marking a significant step in extending the reach of God’s kingdom in the region. With events scheduled for May and June, the church anticipates the profound impact this ministry will have on the surrounding area.
In a notable personal development, one member of the congregation has begun a doctoral program, made possible through the generosity of the seminary and MBTS. This academic pursuit aims to equip Christians for growth and service within the church and wider community, further facilitated by the tangible support received.
As New Hope continues its journey, the collective vision remains focused on securing a permanent home for the congregation, where the Word of God can be proclaimed, lives transformed, and practical assistance extended to war veterans and community members. The ongoing contributions of partners towards this endeavor are deeply appreciated and bring the church closer to realizing this vision.
