International Support
British Prime Minister Liz Truss, in addressing the UN, promised to continue supplying Ukraine with weapons until it triumphs over Russia. US President Joe Biden also addressed the UN in a half hour report which included his unwavering support of Ukraine. But the highlight was the first televised address to the UN by President Zelensky who vowed that the only way to bring an end to the conflict was to punish aggression, restore security of Ukraine, security guarantees, restoration of all Ukraine territory, and the ability to defend.
The EU High Representative Josep Borrell held a meeting of EU ministers after the UN General Assembly calling on all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, to be restored to Ukraine. Towards that end they will announce new sanctions on Russia soon.
President of the European Council Charles Michel, in a speech before the UN General Assembly, called for Russia to lose its seat on the UN Security Council, and thus lose its veto power.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Russia’s plan in holding annexation referendums in Ukrainian occupied territories. Russia is mobilizing another 300,000 troops, but as they will be untrained, it will only prolong the conflict, and will not lead to a Russian victory most experts agree. In response to this new mobilization, the G7 countries have vowed to increase sanctions on Russia. Russian men are fleeing Russia rather than be conscripted into the army. Over a thousand demonstrators were arrested in 38 different cities throughout Russia for participating in the largest demonstrations since the invasion of Ukraine started in February.
