Days 504-505 (July 12-13, 2023)

Ukraine continues its counteroffensive focusing on four major areas: Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Priyutne, and Robotyne. Ukraine managed to make limited advancement in all four areas. Russia continues its push along the Luhansk Line, but its claim to have reached the outskirts of Torske last week was proven false by geolocated footage. Russian forces also had a minor victory in the Battle for Marinka which has been in a stalemate for over a year by finally crossing Druzhby Avenue. It took them one year and thousands of lives to move one street forward.

On Day 2 of the NATO Summit, the leaders of the G7 nations met together with President Zelensky to assuage his disappointment in not receiving a clear timeline for NATO membership. The leaders of the G7 signed their own security agreement with Ukraine that they would continue to supply weapons to Ukraine until they won the war against Russia. Ukraine also made other gains on Day 2 signing an agreement with Sweden, France, Australia, The UK, Norway, and even Japan to receive vital weapons.

Russia launched 15 drones against Ukraine on Wednesday morning with 11 of them being shot down. One drone that was shot down still killed a woman and injured four others as it fell to the ground in Kyiv.

'Massive’ Overnight Russian Drone Attack on Kyiv Injures at Least Four

The Wagner Force debacle continues to wreak havoc among Russian forces. The latest victim was Russian Major General Ivan Popov, Commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army who leads the most effective defense against the Ukrainian counteroffensive. He was fired from his command after he expressed concerns to Chief of the Russian General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov that his troops were excessively tired and needed to be rotated out for rest. In his letter he expressed his concerns of the lack of battery warfare capabilities, the absence of artillery reconnaissance stations, significant Russian casualties from Ukrainian artillery fire, and other issues. He threatened that if nothing was done about it, he would appeal directly to President Putin. This was like what Wagner Force financier Yevgeny Prigozhin had been threatening for months before his short-lived mutiny took place. This will certainly cause a wave of low morale amongst Popov’s troops who admire his leadership.
