Summary of the Events of the Day
Russia’s ground forces remain at a standstill, but civilians are still dying from bombs and missiles from the skies. One difference is that the missiles are now coming from farther away suggesting that Russia is beginning to run out of bombs and missiles.
Battle for Kyiv (including Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, & Zhitomir)
A warehouse in the northwest side of Kyiv was shelled and set on fire. It was a shelter for women and children. Another apartment block was struck with bombs as well as a school and playground resulting in one death.
A school and cultural center in Merefa, just south of Kharkiv, was shelled during the night with artillery fire resulting in the deaths of 21 civilians.
Kharkiv itself was hit in the early morning with a kindergarten and a large outdoor market destroyed. Later in the day a college was hit killing one person.
Battle for the Donbas (Donetsk & Luhansk regions)
I was mistaken yesterday when I said there were no casualties in the destruction of the theater where a thousand women and children had taken shelter, and which was clearly labeled “children” in Russian. There were no known casualties at the time, but the number will most likely be in the hundreds as only 130 have been dug out of the rubble, and the rest will probably not be rescued as all emergency services have been bombed out in the city.
Russian troops are reportedly fighting in the center of Mariupol.
Other Regions
Russia fired six cruise missiles from the Black Sea to the western city of Lviv in an attempt to destroy the airport. They all missed their target but did destroy an aircraft repair plant nearby.
Other News
Russia had drafted a UN resolution condemning Ukraine for the humanitarian crisis in Ukrainian cities for not allowing safe passage of civilians out of the cities or providing humanitarian aid. But not one country, not even China or India, would add their name to the resolution so Russia pulled the resolution from consideration.
Ukraine has called for the suspension of Russia’s veto in the UN Security Council since they have ignored the UN mandate that they stop their attack on Ukraine.
3.25 million Ukrainians have fled Ukraine which is around 7.3% of the population.
International Support
PayPal has come to Ukraine. Previously, Ukrainians could only send money through PayPal, but now they can receive. This was requested by President Zelensky to help Ukrainians during these hard times to send and receive funds. PayPal has blocked all Russians from their services.
